Chapter Sixteen

“Are you serious?” Jeni heard the words come out of Isa’s mouth and couldn’t quite make it work for a couple of reasons. Embarking on an all-out war to kill her husband seemed somehow wrong, and she’d have put money on Isa being a lesbian. She didn’t really know why she thought the latter and couldn’t shake the belief it was true. Somewhere deep down was an interest in this woman she couldn’t shake, and that would be as plausible an explanation as any.

It might also explain why she hadn’t killed Isa right from the beginning. A lame reason for sure. She’d had to find something that made sense, because otherwise she had no good excuse for not already dropping Isa. She’d never exercised mercy before when it came to vampires, male or female.

Information overload hit her now. To find out the creature who’d killed her love was Isa’s husband made her want to throw up. Actually, if she were to believe Isa, he hadn’t personally killed Avery. His order caused her death, and in her book that made him just as guilty, if not more so. To order someone else to do the dirty work spelled coward to her, and a special place in hell awaited those people.

Where to go from here was the big question mark at this point. Becca urged her to listen to what Isa and Patrick had to say, and she’d done that against her better judgment. It might have been preferable if she’d been kept in the dark with that little spouse detail. At least then she’d be able to assume that Isa, despite her undead status, still retained her humanity, and that all other vampires were assholes worthy of a stake. In that scenario she could justify her own lack of action when it came to Isa.

“I am afraid, as Patrick is fond of saying, I’m as serious as a heart attack.”

“Not funny.” This wasn’t the time for jokes or sarcasm.

“Wasn’t trying to be amusing. I didn’t marry George because I loved him. I believed him the lesser of many evils. My father intended to marry me off to whoever had the biggest purse, most of them as old as him or older. I couldn’t live with that reality, and then George showed up. The proverbial knight on a big white horse, although the horse he rode in on happened to be black. That should have been warning enough. I ignored all the signs because he was younger and better looking than any man my father set his sights on. I grabbed him and held on tight though I never loved him. With him, I could survive a world that placed no value on my wishes.”

“Why didn’t you love him?” Her question had nothing to do with anything happening right now. She asked it just the same.

Becca moved toward the doorway. “I need coffee.”

“I need whiskey, and don’t you dare say it’s too early. You know, it’s after noon where I come from.
